There is Safety in Numbers

From the Golden Super Bowl to March Madness, Game Day entertaining is a time for family, friends, great food and making memories.

The Super Bowl event alone is also noted as the 2nd largest day of the year for food consumption in America.

By following simple, easy-to-remember food safety tips, we can all ensure that our at-home Game Day feasts are safe from the kitchen to the table.

  • Always wash your hands with warm water and soap before and after handling food. Keep your kitchen, dishes and utensils clean too. Clean kitchen surfaces with a clean cloth or paper towel.
  • Take the guesswork out of cooking that holiday roast by using a meat thermometer. Cook foods thoroughly to safe internal temperatures (roast beef to 145 degrees F for medium rare and 160 degrees F and ground poultry to 165 degrees F).
  • Keep hot foods hot (140 degrees +) and cold foods cold (40 degrees F or colder). Hot foods can be kept hot with Sterno Entertainment Cooking Fuel, which is ideal for chafing dishes and buffet sets. Cold foods can be kept cold by placing dishes in bowls or trays of ice.
  • Arrange and serve food on several small platters rather than one large try. Replace empty platters rather than adding fresh food to a dish that has already been used.
  • Promptly refrigerate and store all leftovers in shallow containers. Most cooked dishes can keep for up to 3-4 days in the refrigerator. Reheat thoroughly to 165 degrees F when food is hot and steaming.

The US Department of Health & Human Services offers up this “Safe Minimum Cooking Temperatures Guide” to help ensure your cooked foods reach a safe and enjoyable temperature.
